# iai files update

Update a file's contents or name

## Synopsis

Upload local-file as a new version of an existing document, or omit local-file and use --name to rename the file without creating a version.

When uploading a version, the file keeps its stored name unless --name is given.

```
iai files update <id|name> [local-file] [flags]
```

## Examples

```
  iai files update <id|name> ./report.pdf
  iai files update <id|name> ./report.pdf --name "Q3 Report.pdf"
  iai files update <id|name> --name "Q3 Report Final.pdf"
```

## Options

```
  -h, --help                  help for update
      --name string           New stored name (default when uploading: keep the current name)
  -o, --organization string   Organization name that owns the project
  -p, --project string        Project name
      --timeout duration      HTTP timeout for the update (default 15m0s)
```

## Options inherited from parent commands

```
      --api-key string               API key for authentication
      --cfg-file string              Path to YAML config file with organization, project, and optional service definitions
      --deployment-hostname string   Hostname for the deployment API (default "https://deployment.interactive.ai")
      --hostname string              Hostname for the API (default "https://app.interactive.ai")
```

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.interactive.ai/cli/iai_files_update.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
